Never A Dull Moment: A Tapestry of Scenes & Stories from an Adirondack Medical Practice
Text and Photographs by Daniel Way, M.D.
Having been in practice for three decades I have witnessed the digitalization, hyper-specialization, over-regulation and dehumanization of medical care. One of the sustaining forces that keeps my flame burning is the relationship I have with my patients. Despite the many changes that have developed in the practice of medicine over the centuries for good or bad, that is the one constant which still attracts most primary care physicians to our profession. The proud and independent people of the Adirondacks are to me an endless source of wonder and admiration, whether they are a native whose family roots go back to colonial times or a retiree from Staten Island… For the most part, Adirondackers live here because they want to, because they like to, and that defines the common bond that makes them special. When I can write a story that describe the subject I have photographed and my relationship with him or her, it reinforces the special bond I have with that patient or colleague that attracted me to the profession in the first place... And just as life can be dramatic, humorous, heartbreaking and amazing, so I hope will be the true stories within these pages.” Daniel Way, from Never a Dull Moment.
